April 2006 Book Review

How to be Brilliant, Change Your Ways in 90 Days!
Michael Heppell

On the surface, this book appears seemingly simple.  As I read through the pages, I felt myself saying time and again “That’s so simple…”  As a coach myself, I found many of the exercises and messages were ones I use with my own clients, time and again.  Why?  Because they work – provided the client is willing to commit to the process.

While I find the tools the author shares are very easy to use, there is always a bit of dubious doubt in the back of my mind from any program that offers complete change in such a short time frame.  If the human race were able to read a book and change their lives, there would only be three books on the shelves at Chapters under “Self- Development”.

The truth is, not many of us are disciplined enough to apply the tools, techniques and suggestions contained in books, CD’s or DVD’s to make dramatic changes in our lives.  And when we do make changes, they are often short-lived, as our tendency to slowly creep back into old and familiar habits grows over time.

If anyone is planning on using this or any other self-help book to change their lives, my suggestion would be to work with a buddy (or perhaps a coach) to help you take serious action and make lasting changes.  Choose someone who will support you, guide you and hold you accountable (in a nice way) to your commitments, not a draconian task master.  Having someone on your side as you work through the chapters of this book will help solidify your resolve, and motivate you to keep going.

Change is not easy, and trying to change all by yourself is lonely.  Overall, Michael Heppell shares some valid and powerful activities.  Gather a friend, partner or coach to help you along the way, and the task becomes easier and more fun.  A goal without action is just a wish.  Get into action and rock your world!
